January 23 through February 28, 2019
Reception: Wednesday, January 23, 4:00-6:00 pm @ Oxnard College McNish Gallery
Artist talk: 4:30 pm
The McNish Gallery at Oxnard College is pleased to present LOSING GRAVITY IN THE MEGATROPOLIS, geometric waves, vibrant fields and optic frequencies a solo exhibit featuring sculpture and paintings by Los Angeles artist Mela M. A reception for the artist will take place on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 from 4:00-7:00pm with an artist talk at 4:30 pm.
For this exhibit, artist Mela M will feature artwork she produced within the last two years comprised of intricate hand-cut and painted sculptural pieces in acrylic and wood. Mela M continues to evolve her contemporary abstract perspectives of the architectonic world that surrounds us. She combines multiple points of perspective that allows the viewer to see objects in her paintings from the top, sides and bottom simultaneously challenging the viewer to negotiate the relationship between space, form, light and shadow.
Mela M writes, “This work represents the concept of an orbiting monolithic megatropolis losing gravity and capturing the universal phenomena of geometric waves, vibrant fields and optic frequencies. In this work, as gravity diminishes, these monolithic architectures tower and descend as they transform the capacity of space. And in the space, from our all- encompassing view, we see a greater context that harbors an enduring evolution of their infinite layers but we also see an upside down and inside out world.”
Mela M was born in Russia. Her artwork has been exhibited at the Long Beach Art Museum, Makii Masura Fine Arts in Tokyo Japan, Torrance Art Museum, Santa Monica Museum of Art, Shoshana Wayne Gallery and the Marc Chagall Museum among others. Her work is included in numerous art collections including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Minsk, Tangent Contemporary Art in San Francisco and Crimson on Volga Arts College in Russia. She received her M.F.A. degree in Painting from Claremont Graduate University in 2002 M.F.A. degree in Textile Design & Multiple Media from the Technological Institute of Art in Belarus.
