We have good news for you!

Effective April 1, 2019 at Oxnard College, standardized assessment tests are no longer needed for placement into transfer-level English and Math classes. Only ESL (English as a Second Language) and Spanish testing will still be offered.

With the newly enacted Assembly Bill 705, two alternative measures for assessing students are recommended for course placement in English and Math:

  1. Students who graduated from a United States high school within the last 10 years will be appropriately placed in English and Math classes based on high school records instead of standardized assessment tests.
  2. Students who graduated more than 10 years ago, students who have foreign transcripts, students that do not have access to their high school transcripts and/or students who left high school without graduating will use an Informed Self-Placement tool to choose the course(s) most suitable for them.

AB 705

For many years, community colleges have required students to take assessment tests to determine the level of English and Math classes they would be placed. Pursuant to Education Code section 78213, students have the right to access transfer-level coursework in English and Math using other measures that are stronger indicators of student skill level such as coursework, grades and grade point average that are found on high school transcripts. Please click on the video below for more information regarding AB 705.
