The Indigenous Knowledge Conference will be held on Friday, April 11, 2025, from 9:00am to 3:30pm at the Oxnard College Performing Arts Building. This event, organized by the Mixteco Indígena Community Organizing Project (MICOP), will focus on the theme "From Land to Body to Soul: Indigenous Healing in a Changing World."

The conference will bring together community members, scholars, and advocates to explore the importance of Indigenous thought, creativity, and health. It will provide a space for learning, discussion, and engagement around how Indigenous communities approach healing and navigate the challenges of today's world.

Keynote Speaker:

Dr. Sarait Martinez-Ortega
Dr. Sarait Martinez, a Zapotec organizer, is the Executive Director of the Centro Binacional para el Desarrollo Indígena Oaxaqueño (CBDIO). With a focus on Indigenous immigrant youth, Dr. Martinez holds a doctorate in Educational Leadership from San Francisco State University and has worked extensively in community organizing, youth outreach, and advocacy. Her talk will highlight her work in empowering Indigenous communities and her perspective on healing through education and leadership.

Plenary Speaker: 

Luzmaria (Luzma) Espinosa
Luzma Espinosa, an artist and cultural advocate, will talk about the connection between art and culture with wellbeing. Born in Uruapan, Michoacán, Mexico, Luzma has been a prominent voice in preserving and sharing Indigenous traditions. As the Poet Laureate of Ventura County for 2020–2024, she has been recognized for her contributions to the arts and her commitment to fostering healing through cultural expression.
