Fidelia A. Flores, Financial Aid Specialist, Oxnard College

Describe your position in 2-3 sentences:  

As a Financial Aid Specialist, I assist students in applying for federal and state grants by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act Application. I am also the Foster Youth, Homeless Youth and Undocumented Liaison. I enjoy working with these students to guide them in achieving their educational goals.

How long have you worked for the District?   

I began working at Oxnard College as a Financial Aid Specialist in October 2015. Prior to that, I was a provisional staff and student worker in Oxnard College’s Financial Aid Office.

Are you a VCCCD alum? If yes, which college? 

I attended Oxnard College and received my associate degree in general studies: social and behavioral science. I transferred to California State University, Los Angeles and obtained my bachelor’s in sociology: law and society with a minor in gerontology.

When you’re not working, what do you enjoy doing?

I enjoy spending time with my mom and four sisters and visiting the “Happiest Place on Earth” (Disneyland) as a Magic Key holder. I also enjoy going to concerts. I have had the opportunity to see Harry Styles, BTS and Bad Bunny. I am looking forward to seeing Coldplay, The Killers, Daddy Yankee and Lady Gaga.

What do you find rewarding about your job or career? 

Being a first-generation student and guiding students to pursue their education goals is very rewarding. My favorite day of the academic year is Commencement Day. I enjoy watching the students and their families celebrate their accomplishments at Oxnard College.

Do you do any volunteer work? If so, what? 

I’ve been part of the Ventura County Community Foundation: TEACh Scholarship Fund Committee for three years. The scholarship is for current and former foster youth students.
