Spring 2025 Fire Academy Application window has closed
Fall Applications are received the month of March
Spring Applications are received the month of September
The Fire Academy Application window opens twice a year, in March for the Fall Academy and in September for the Spring Academy. The application is available on the bottom of this page. Applications will not be accepted until the window opens.
PREREQUISITES
Successful completion of the following classes are required prior to Fire Academy start date:
- EMT 169 - Emergency Medical Technician. Also, a copy of the "Course Completion Record" must be submitted as proof of successful skills exam completion OR a copy of your EMT certification card through the state of California or through NREMT. *
- FT 151 - Fire Protection Organizations
- FT 154 - Fire Behavior and Combustion
*The "Course Completion Record" or EMT card must be valid through the application process up to the completion of the academy.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION
All supporting documents must be in your application package or will be considered incomplete. Courses in progress must include a Progress Report from your instructor with current grade and be attached to your application upon submission.
Applicants must provide unofficial transcripts, EMT certification, official form of ID, resume, and other required documents. If transcripts are not provided for all courses taken, the application will be considered incomplete. This also applies to students that have taken classes at Oxnard College, Ventura College, or Moorpark College as we do not have access to student records. Incomplete applications will be set aside and ranked last.
SELECTION PROCESS
All applications will be screened for completeness, accuracy, in-progress reports, and other requested information. We typically receive many more applications than the 40 seats available. Admission is open to all students and very competitive. Cadets will be selected in the following priority order:
- First priority: Applicants who have completed all their prerequisites at Oxnard College by June 15 and possess an EMT certification card through the state of California or through NREMT*.
- Second priority: Applicants who have completed all their prerequisites at another institution by June 15 and possess an EMT certification card through the state of California or through NREMT*.
- Third priority: Applicants who have completed all their prerequisites (FT R151 & FT R154) by June 15 and possess a valid NREMT skills “Course Completion Record at time of application *”
*The "Course Completion Record" or EMT card must be valid through the application process up to the completion of the academy.
Applicants who have completed all their prerequisites at the time of application are given priority over those who have not.
PHYSICAL FITNESS REQUIREMENT
At orientation, prospective cadets will need to complete 5 tower runs in 9 minutes to demonstrate the minimum physical fitness standard. Failure to demonstrate this minimum level of fitness will result in dismissal from the program. The tower has five flights of stairs and is located across from the Fire Technology building.
ORIENTATION
If your application is accepted, you will be invited to attend a mandatory orientation in October. The first part of the orientation requires prospective cadets to demonstrate the physical fitness standard stated above. Failure to demonstrate this minimum level of fitness will result in dismissal from the program and you will be excused from orientation. The second part of the orientation may only be attended by those successfully completing part 1. It is suggested that students prepare themselves to meet and exceed the physical fitness requirement.
HEALTH SCREENING
Upon acceptance to the academy, students will be required to go through a health, wellness, stamina, and strength screening which will be conducted by the college at a designated time and location. This will include a lung function test/spirometry which is required so you can be fit tested for a SCBA mask. If cadets wish to have their screening done by their primary doctor, they will need to submit a signed statement in addition to their signed medical forms.
