For many years, community colleges have required students to take assessment tests to determine the level of English and Math classes they would be placed. Pursuant to Education Code section 78213, states that students have the right to access transfer-level coursework in English and Math using other measures that are stronger indicators of student skill level such as coursework, grades and grade point average that are found on high school transcripts.  Assessments tests to determine the placement of English and Math classes are no longer required. Multiple measures means that colleges incorporate two more more criteria for assessment and placement. Under a multiple measures approach, standardized testing is no longer the primary means of assessing if a student is prepared for college-level coursework.

The Multiple Measures Placement Service (MMPS) is designed to help California’s community colleges maximize the probability a student will complete transfer-level English and math courses within one year, as required by Assembly Bill 705.
