Describe your position:
As the MESA Program Coordinator at Ventura College, my role is to serve first-generation, low-income students who seek to transfer to four-year universities to earn STEM bachelor's degrees. I am responsible for administering the overall program, grant requirements, submitting data and grant reports, serving as a mentor, fostering local industries partnerships and marketing the program.
Additionally, I coordinate and provide critical services and resources that focus on maximizing students' academic performance and experience through workshops, professional development and networking. These efforts cultivate community and belonging for our MESA students.
How long have you worked for the District?
I’ve been part of the District since 2016, when I accepted the position of Outreach Specialist at Moorpark College. After a few years, I accepted the role of MESA Program Coordinator at Ventura College where I mentor and serve 125 STEM students.
Are you a VCCCD alum? If yes, which college?
As a first-generation student and a proud product of the community college system, I received an associate degree in liberal arts from Allan Hancock College before pursuing a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
I loved learning and decided to go back to school and earn a master’s degree in public administration from California State University, Northridge.
When you’re not working, what do you enjoy doing?
When I am not working, I love being out with my family, traveling, being outdoors and shopping. I love exploring and learning so when I travel, I try to do as much as I can.
What do you find rewarding about your job or career?
One of the most rewarding aspects of my career is being part of an organization where I can really make a difference. In my role I am able to motivate students to see more in themselves and be a proactive confidence builder. I take pride in my ability to offer impactful career and educational programming every year that helps students reach their next level.
Do you do any volunteer work? If so, what?
Before becoming a mom, one of the most gratifying things I did was become a Court Appointment Special Advocate (CASA) for five years. At times it was difficult, but I knew I was making a difference in a child’s life by making recommendations to the court regarding how the system and community can best serve and support the child I worked with.
